Volvo poster boy Scott McLaughlin has claimed the coveted Barry Sheene Medal at the annual V8 Supercars Gala Awards function.

McLaughlin was announced the sport’s best and fairest as part of the V8 Supercars Gala Awards at Sydney’s Darling Harbour.

The 21-year-old Kiwi expat enjoyed a strong second year in the main game, claiming four wins and equalling Jamie Whincup with 10 Armor All pole positions for the season.

McLaughlin’s easy going demeanour and sublime ability was on show through the season with his popularity soaring in the process.

The 2012 Dunlop Series winner and NZ SuperTourer title holder has stunned the sport with his pure race-craft, raw speed and precocious nature.

Taking centre stage for the sixth time in the last seven seasons, Jamie Whincup accepted his award as the series champion.

Dunlop Series driver Todd Hazelwood (Matt Stone Racing) claimed the Young Gun Award that is named in the honour of the late acclaimed motoring and motorsport journalist Mike Kable.

Other awards presented included Red Bull Racing Australia’s Teams’ Championship trophy, while the Brisbane outfit also captured the Fans Choice Award as the Best Presented Team.

The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 claimed the Fans Choice Award as the Best Event while Red Bull driver Craig Lowndes was the Fans Choice as the Most Popular.

The combination of Chaz Mostert and Paul Morris were presented as Bathurst Champions after their miraculous last-to-first effort in a wild race.

Eggleston Motorsport driver Paul Dumbrell was also recognised as the 2014 Dunlop Series Champion.

The Best Volunteer Group went to the ITM 500 Auckland event at Pukekohe, while veteran journalist Mark Fogarty landed the V8 Supercars Media Award for his coverage of the sport.
