Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle believes that it’s time to end the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
In a frank column published in today’s Herald Sun newspaper, Doyle concludes that ‘”time’s up” for the race that has been held at the picturesque Albert Park street course since 1996.
The Victorian Government currently has a contract in place to hold the race until 2015, but has come under increasing criticism in recent years due to the cost to the taxpayer, which in 2010 stood at a reported $50 million.
Doyle believes that after 2015, the Victorian Government will have no choice but to abandon the race, due to the prohibitive costs of upgrading Albert Park or moving the event to a purpose-built facility.
