Miller confident of fitness for Australian Grand Prix
Jack Miller

Jack Miller is confident he will be fit enough to ride next weekend’s Michelin Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island as a recovery from a broken leg continues.

The Australian has elected to sit out MotoGP’s visit to Japan this weekend in order to ensure he is in the best possible shape to do battle in front of his home ground.

Miller fractured his right tibia while riding a trials bike in Andorra, which resulted in surgery in Barcelona last week, prompting Marc VDS to call up Hiroshi Aoyama to fill the void at Motegi.

The 22-year-old arrived in Australia on Wednesday where he is undergoing physiotherapy on his leg in preparation for next week’s visit to Phillip Island.

“I probably could have ridden Japan but I didn’t want to be on the back foot for Phillip Island if it started swelling up there,” Miller told Speedcafe.com.

“I have given it an extra week and I will go to Phillip Island physically fit. I will just try and do the best I can.

“I’m really happy with the progress it (the leg) is making.

“As soon as I found out my leg was broken my main worry was how long it was going to take, because the Australian Grand Prix is the one race of the year I really don’t want to miss.

“We have had a pretty solid last couple of races with the bike working a little bit better, so I think we can do a solid job next weekend.”

Miller is able to walk without the use of crutches and has been riding a push bike to assist his recovery.

“It (The leg) is alright. I feel good. I got 70km out of it on the pushbike this morning,” he added.

“I’m just doing some physio on it now and working on getting more and more motion in it.

“I was just out on the trials bike with Alex Rins, Maverick Viñales and Fabio Quartararo just playing up in the hills and the front wheel just washed out on some slippery grass.

“I dabbed my foot on the ground and as I did that it jarred the leg and split the tibia down the middle.

“It doesn’t really hurt all that much. Walking on it, I haven’t used crutches for the last three or four days. It is pretty good.

“I did three hours on the bike last week I have already done more than that this week.”

The MotoGP Michelin Australian Grand Prix will begin on Friday October 20 with opening practice scheduled for 1055 local time.

FOX SPORTS will show every practice, qualifying session and race from the Michelin Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix LIVE and ad-break free from lights out to the chequered flag. Coverage begins from 9.55am EDT on Friday on FOX SPORTS 505.
