Roulstone reflects on difficult Moto2 debut

Jacob Roulstone says his Moto2 debut at Hungary’s Balaton Park was essentially turned into a test after a crash in practice left him to nurse a shoulder injury.

Roulstone reflects on difficult Moto2 debut
Jacob Roulstone finished the Moto2 race at the Grand Prix of Hungary.

During Saturday morning’s practice, Roulstone crashed at the third turn and went tumbling through the gravel trap.

Roulstone racked up just six laps to his name in the session before going into qualifying.

He was the slowest of the 12 riders in Q1 and 1.197s off the pace, consigning him to 26th on the grid.

“It was a tricky day for me,” said Roulstone on Saturday.

“I had quite a big crash this morning, which left me a bit sore and also cost us some valuable track time.

“That made the rest of the day more challenging because every lap is important when you’re learning a new bike, a new team and a new circuit all at the same time.

“This afternoon I was still struggling quite a lot under braking, which affects the entire corner and makes it difficult to ride the way I normally would.

“However, I have confidence in the team and I know we can continue improving the bike together.

“Even if the position isn’t where we want it to be yet, we’re gathering important information every session.”

Roulstone finished Sunday’s race more than a minute behind race winner Manuel Gonzalez of Intact GP.

American Racing Team rider Filip Salac led the opening stanza of the race before being overhauled by Gonzalez.

Third went to Senna Agius, just under four second adrift of his Intact GP teammate.

Roulstone offered a positive assessment of his race despite the circumstances.

“It was quite a difficult race for me,” he said.

“I was still feeling some pain from the crash yesterday, but my main objective was to complete the race distance, learn as much as possible and continue understanding the bike.

“In many ways, today’s race felt like an extended test session because every lap was giving me new information.

“I was able to try different things, understand the bike better and gain valuable experience working with the team.

“Balaton Park was a challenging place to make my Moto2 debut, but I feel we made a good step forward compared to where we started on Friday.

“I’d like to thank the team for all their support, and I’m looking forward to continuing this progress at Brno.”

Roulstone was a late replacement for Honda Team Asia rider Mario Aji, who recently underwent surgery on a broken back.

Roulstone will continue to ride for Honda Team Asia at the upcoming Grand Prix of Czechia at Brno.
