James Moffat: It’s not over, but it’s a big ask

Pre-season Fujitsu V8 Supercars Series favourite James Moffat is refusing to rule himself out of winning this year’s series, although he admits it will be a big ask from here.

The Norton 360 Ford Rising Stars driver is currently sixth in the Fujitsu points table after two shocking rounds at Queensland Raceway and Winton.

Moffat, who will drive for Ford Performance Racing in this year’s endurance races, told Speedcafe.com.au that his short term goal will be to get up to second place in the title.

“We’re definitely not where we’d like to be in the championship, and probably not where we deserve to be in reality,” he said.

“You never says never, but it’s increasingly becoming more difficult. Steve (Owen) has got more than a round of points up his sleeve. I’m still only 100-odd points behind Nick Percat (in second place), so in terms of that, there’s enough points to be made up.”

Moffat admits that run-away title leader Steve Owen will need to have at least one bad round for him to have any sniff, and therefore, his round-by-round focus has changed.

“The biggest problem for us is that we’ve got four rounds left, and we need Steve to have a bad result,” he said.

“My outlook has changed a little bit. I’ve got to concentrate on going out and winning some races and proving the speed of the car. Queensland Raceway was a bump in the road for our car speed. We were more competitive at Winton. We’re getting there with the car.

“Unless Steve has some bad luck, it’s going to be very difficult to catch him. We know that he’s going to be very competitive everywhere we go. From that point of view, it will be difficult, but we’ll keep trying, aim to win some races and try and get some good results for the people who have supported me like Norton, Toshiba and Boylan Traffic Solutions.”

The next round of the Fujitsu V8 Series will be at the Sucrogen Townsville 400 in far north Queensland on July 9-11.
