Chaz Mostert dominates FFord at Townsville

Chaz Mostert leads Ash Walsh and Ryan Simpson

Chaz Mostert has dominated the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford races at the Sucrogen Townsville 400, winning all three races.

The only time Mostert wasn’t on top of the time tables that count was in qualifying – Ryan Simpson took that honour – but when the big points were on offer, Mostert asserted his authority, crushing the field and extending his title lead.

In Race 1, Mostert led from the get-go, streaking away from the rest of the field.

The Spectrum pilot was unstoppable and built up a large buffer as his championship rivals squabbled for the minor podium positions.

By races end Mostert was over four seconds clear ahead of Nick Foster and Geoff Uhrhane.

In Race 2, Mostert picked up where he left off in Race 1, but it was behind where the championship reached a pivotal point.

An early Safety Car saw the field slow coming onto the pit straight much to the surprise of Uhrhane, who clipped the back of Foster and sent them both into retirement.

That opened up the round for those just behind and Ash Walsh and Simpson took full advantage of it to finish just ahead of an impressive Cameron Waters.

Race 3 saw a good early battle between the front three drivers, but by mid-race distance, Mostert began to build a buffer to the chasing Walsh and Simpson.

Once again he streaked away to win comfortable to sweep the round, while a late mistake from Simpson handed second in the race and round to Walsh.

Simpson recovered to third, to finish third for the round, just ahead of Cameron Waters.

Not surprisingly, Mostert said that he thoroughly enjoyed the race weekend.

“The Townsville circuit is awesome and it’s really well suited to the Synergy Motorsport Spectrum,” Mostert said.

“I’m really happy with my own performance this weekend. I tried my best for my mum, who passed away just one year ago, so this weekend is for her.

“It was a good weekend for the championship, but there is still a long way to go and anything can happen; we’re not getting too confident.”

15-year-old Linde Mygale driver Waters had his best weekend of the year to finish in fourth and take over the lead in the rookie of the year points.

Not so good was Nathan Morcom, who had his second roll-over in two rounds after climbing over the back of Andre Borell. Both drivers were uninjured in the accident.

Round 6 of the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship will take place at the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit on the Gold Coast on October 22-24.
