Mostert flies to the top in Practice 2

Chaz Mostert

Chaz Mostert set a blistering pace to top the second Supercars practice session at the Coates Hire Ipswich Super Sprint.

The Supercheap Auto Ford driver, boosted by green tyres, posted a practice record 1:08.99s in the dying seconds of the 45 minute session.

Mostert’s impressive lap arrived amid a flurry of times in the final moments, which saw Mark Winterbottom briefly hold second position as he produced a much stronger showing compared to that of Practice 1.

In the end, it was Fabian Coulthard who emerged in second spot with the DJR Team Penske Ford pilot 0.1s adrift of Mostert.

Shane van Gisbergen finished third having led the majority of the session in the #97 Red Bull Holden.

Rick Kelly was among those to improve late on as the Nissan Motorsport driver lit up the timing screens before sliding to fourth at the chequered flag.

Erebus Motorsport’s David Reynolds was fifth ahead of Winterbottom in the #5 Prodrive Ford.

The top 10 was completed by Craig Lowndes (Triple Eight Holden), Lee Holdsworth (Preston Hire Racing) Cameron Waters (Prodrive Ford) and championship leader Scott McLaughlin (DJR Team Penske).

Mobil 1 HSV Racing narrowly missed out on the top 10 with James Courtney 12th and Scott Pye 13th.

Jack Le Brocq maintained his top wildcard driver status in 18th spot.

Championship contender Jamie Whincup could only manage a time good enough for 20th position ahead of Supercars debutant Todd Hazelwood.

In a largely uneventful session, fellow wildcard runners James Golding was however lucky to avoid the barriers at Turn 3 when he ran off the road after suffering a tyre failure.

The field will return for another 45 minute practice session on Saturday morning at 1045 AEST, ahead of a 15 minute qualifying session (1330) and a 39 lap race (1615).
