Paul was hospitalised after his Lamborghini Temerario collided at high speed with the BMW M4 of Schubert Motorsport driver Kelvin van der Linde during the first race.
The incident began when Paul lost control of his car due to oil left on track by another competitor.
Three days after the incident, the team has confirmed his injuries include a broken tibia and fibula as well as a fractured vertebrae.
Paul underwent surgery on the injuries and will remain in hospital as he recovers.
The Grasser Racing Team said Paul will be sidelined for the time being while he recovers from his injuries.
“The accident was a major setback for me,” said Paul.
“I’d like to thank all the rescue workers and the doctors who looked after me so exceptionally well.
“Now it’s time to look ahead. I’m taking a break for the time being to look after my body and my health, and I’ll be back in full force soon.
“I’ll be in hospital for the next few days, after which I’ll be heading to rehab.
“I really appreciate the support of my family, my team, my friends and everyone who’s checking in on me at the moment, and I’ll be consciously focusing on that support and my recovery in the coming weeks.
“I’d like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the many kind words and get-well wishes. They give me strength and keep me going on my road to recovery.”
DTM competitors drove with “get well soon” messages on their car for Paul a day after the incident.
“Unfortunately, it was a dark weekend for us,” said team principal Gottfried Grasser.
“Max’s accident really affected us all. We identified an oil spill as the cause, after another car had been leaking fluid throughout the entire race.
“Under braking, he then lost control on this fluid. Our analysis led us to no other conclusion, as a thorough inspection of the car revealed no technical fault.
“All of us at TGI Team by GRT wish Max a speedy recovery and hope to see him return to us soon.
“We know he’s a fighter and will get through this difficult time.”
Van der Linde was also hospitalised and missed Sunday’s race due to damage to his car and without any serious injuries.
“I woke up this morning thankful for life and being able to get away from the worst crash of my career without any serious injury,” van der Linde wrote.
“Yesterday was a wake up call that we never know whats around the next corner and a reminder to be thankful for every day on earth.
“Thank you to BMW for building a super safe race car, you saved my life. Thanks to everyone that reached out so far, your messages mean so much.”

This year Grasser Racing Team debuted the new Temerario with Paul and factory Lamborghini driver Mirko Bortolotti.
Bortolotti has a season-best fifth place finish at the Lausitzring from the eighth races to date.
The Italian claimed finishes of eighth and 11th at the Norisring.
Team Abt driver Marco Mapelli has the best result for the Temerario in DTM this season with second at the Lausitzring.
“On the sporting side, there isn’t much to say about the weekend,” said Grasser.
“As always, our aim was to make the most of the car’s potential within the limits of what was possible.
“At the moment, our team and drivers are managing to do this with a satisfactory level of consistency, but we simply lack the performance needed to close the gap on the front-runners.”
