The Jules Gounon/Daniel Juncadella /Chris Lulham entry was among the favourites but began to suffer engine issues and dropped out of the top 10.

With seven hours and 15 minutes to go, the car was wheeled into the garage where it retired.

“We have been struggling probably since 5am with the engine and some different issues with the car,” said Gounon.

“We have been trying to fix it. We parked the car one hour ago after my last stint to try to clean and try to help but I was already losing over one-and-a-half seconds over the lap on engine.

“Unfortunately we have to retire. Very difficult year so far but it is like this.”

It’s the second straight Intercontinental GT Challenge race that Max Verstappen’s team has been hampered by mechanical trauma.

At the Nurburgring 24, the #3 Mercedes-AMG GT3 was taken out of contention by a drivetrain issue.

A Safety Car with just over seven hours to go neutralised the field. At the time, Maro Engel led in the #48 Mercedes-AMG Team Mann-Filter with Luca Stolz and Lucas Auer.

The #54 Dinamic GT Porsche 911 GT3 R sat second in the hands of Bastian Buus while Valentino Rossi was third in the #46 Team WRT BMW M4 GT3.

Matt Campbell’s #22 Schumacher CLRT Porsche was fifth in the hands of teammate Ayhancan Guven.

On the stroke of seven hours to go, Jordan Love is a contender in Pro-Am. The #0 Johor Motorsports Racing JMR Corvette leads.

The #914 Razoon More Than Racing Porsche driven by Bryce Fullwood is the last car still competing in the Pro-Am class, albeit 35 laps off the class leader.

In the Silver class, the Christian Mansell #20 Team Motopark Mercedes is three laps down and seventh in class.

Calan Williams’ hopes of a Bronze class win have been dashed. The Oman Racing by Century Motorsport BMW M4 has been retired with just over 12 hours to go.

The car was damaged inside the first half hour of the race, forcing the team to put panels from its spare car on the wounded Bimmer.

Bayley Hall (#123 Muehlner Motorsport Porsche) is 20 laps down while Garnet Patterson (#222 2Seas Motorsport Mercedes) is five laps in arrears of the class-leading #74 Kessel Racing Ferrari 296.
