Greg Murphy will fight the pain and compete in this weekend’s L&H 500 at Phillip Island – the first V8 Supercars endurance race this year.
The Castrol EDGE Commodore made the call to race this weekend after a positive run in the car during the three practice sessions at the Victorian circuit today.
“I think I’ll stick it out,” he said.
“The back’s no problem at all and the leg situation with the nerve doesn’t feel any different to what it did this morning [before I jumped into the car] so I think it will be alright.”
The four-time Bathurst winner underwent surgery just over two weeks ago to fix a bulged disc in his back suffered when he was on a family holiday in Fiji recently.
Murphy’s decision to race means New Zealand countryman Daniel Gaunt, who tested with the team last week and was in the Castrol team garage today, misses out on a drive this weekend.
Rookie Tim Blanchard will co-drive with Murphy. The pair finished the day in 21st position in changing weather conditions.
Tomorrow’s qualifying and racing will see each driver do one qualifying and race session each. Nominations are currently being placed for which driver will do which session.
