James Moffat and Todd Kelly led a flurry of late fast times to take a one-two for Nissan Motorsport in second practice at Hidden Valley.

Red Bull Holden driver Craig Lowndes sat atop the order for almost the entire session as he completed an unbroken 15 lap mini race simulation.

The run included 10 consecutive laps in the 1:10s range, before drifting away to a 1:11.5s on his final circuit.

Lowndes would be demoted from first to fifth over the final two minutes as others ran late flying laps.

Scott McLaughlin briefly topped the times before final efforts from Kelly and then Moffat.

Jamie Whincup also put in a late lap to be fourth in the second of the Red Bull Holdens.

The mixed order comes on a day where teams can utilise both hard and soft compound pre-marked tyres, as well as one new set from their weekend allocation.

Lee Holdsworth and Will Davison continued Erebus’ strong start to the weekend in sixth and seventh respectively, while Jason Bright, Fabian Coulthard and Michael Caruso completed the top 10.

Russell Ingall, who lost time in Practice 1 with a transmission leak, was one place further back in 11th; a full second shy of Moffat’s best.

The differing tyre compounds and quality ensured that 2.4s covered the field.

A third and final practice session for the day will get underway at 1425 local time.
