Patrizi scores Carrera Cup sweep

Michael Patrizi has completed what turned out to be a two-race sweep of the Carrera Cup at Sandown.

After a multicar accident abandoned this morning’s second race, points were allocated to two races meaning a maximum of 60 points were left unattainable.

Although not as dramatic as this morning’s race, there was a championship-changing moment as the cars went to the grid when points leader Steven Richards headed to the pitlane with a broken driveshaft. This opened the door for title rivals Warren Luff and Craig Baird; although determined drives from the likes of Patrizi, Shae Davies and Sam Power meant the damage to Richards’ points advantage was not as bad as it could have been.

Patrizi won the start from Davies and was never seriously challenged. Baird made his way into third while Luff and Power battled for fourth. Power grabbing the position midway through the race and held on through to the finish.

A massive effort from Tony Bates’ crew got his car into the race after this morning’s accident and he was in a great battle with Elite points leader Stephen Grove. Then Bates overcooked things at Dandenong Road corner and Grove took the Elite win from James Bergmuller; who also had repairs after this morning, with Shane Smollen in third.

Carrera Cup officials gave an update on Nick McBride following the Race #2 accident with the Sonic driver taken to hospital for observation for heavy bruising.

The Carrera Cup next heads to Mount Panorama as part of the Bathurst 1000 weekend.
