Perkins stays on top in Dunlop Series practice

Eggleston Motorsport’s Jack Perkins ensured he is the man to beat after topping the second Dunlop Series practice session at Sydney Olympic Park.

The series front runner continued his impressive form at the Homebush street circuit as he shaved almost a second off his personal best from the earlier morning session.

Perkins ended the incident packed free practice two tenths faster than championship contender Ash Walsh, while Steve Owen was two tenths further back in third.

George Miedecke briefly led the session but he ended up in fourth just ahead of Drew Russell and Taz Douglas.

Meanwhile title favourite Dale Wood could only post the seventh fastest time.

Unlike practice one, Perkins set the pace from the off but it was hard for the drivers to settle into a rhythm due to several interruptions. First Jim Pollicina brought out the yellow flags with a spin in the opening five minutes.

However, worse was to follow as Morgan Haber hit the wall hard five minutes later, which halted proceedings, with Perkins leading Owen and Walsh.

Wood was the first to make a move when the action resumed as he leapt into second shortly followed by Walsh, who jumped up to third.

But as the session reached the half way stage, Miedecke popped in a time of 1:29.6s to take him to the top of the timesheets.

Perkins didn’t waste time in issuing a response by eclipsing Miedecke’s time by six tenths of a second.

Meanwhile, Shannons Supercar Showdown winner Todd Hazelwood tested the limits of the circuit as he brushed the wall heavily. Luckily he was able to recover and continue.

The same couldn’t be said for Michael Hector who brought out the red flags again after a collision with the barrier late on.

In the end, Perkins proved to be in class of his own and his effort of 1m29.00s was more than good enough for him to finish quickest. Walsh improved before the red flag to grab second with Owen in third.

Triple Eight Racing Engineering’s and double Moto GP champion Casey Stoner made significant improvement to finish 13th fastest.
