Polestar to concentrate on two cars in 2015

Polestar managing director Christian Dahl says his company will continue to concentrate on supplying just two entries in the V8 Supercars Championship next season.

The towering Swede attended last weekend’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000; his first appearance at a V8 Supercars meeting since March.

Polestar entered the Australian championship in conjunction with Volvo at the beginning of the season, supplying engines to factory backed outfit Garry Rogers Motorsport.

Volvo Car Australia has publicly stated interest in expanding its presence beyond two cars for 2015, holding talks with current Mercedes-AMG customer team Erebus Motorsport.

Dahl, however, has revealed that Polestar is set on maintaing its current two-car for at least another season.

“I think it’s the right way to concentrate on what we’ve got at the moment,” Dahl told Speedcafe.com at Bathurst.

“There’s only one car that can win the championship so expanding the program before we are fully competitive, I think it’s better we focus with GRM and reaching the top with these cars to start with.”

Dahl’s attitude comes despite Polestar’s B8444S engine proving an immediate pace-setter, winning two races and scoring seven pole positions across the year to date.

“I think we can still improve the reliability of the engine and the fuel consumption,” he said, noting that the parity rules leave little scope for performance enhancements.

“I think the team have made big improvements on the race pace but I still think there is more room for improvement for next year and I think we should address that.”

Hopeful that Volvo Polestar Racing can challenge for the championship in 2015, Dahl says that the following season would be a better time for expansion.

“When you have a competitive car it’s like insurance because if you have more of them you have more chance to win,” he said.

“But the first thing is to have an engine and a car that is capable of winning (the championship) and I still think we have further to do on that one.

“In the future when the car and the engine is good enough, more cars will give a more of a chance to win.

“At the moment everything is focussed on developing what we have.”

While Volvo is yet to publicly declare its car count for next season, a recent change of managing director at the company is understood to have played a role in tempering ambitions to see more S60s on the grid.

Matt Braid, the architect of the V8 Supercars program, enjoyed his final public outing with Volvo at Bathurst, while his replacement, Kevin McCann, made a brief appearance before departing for Sweden.

The situation sees Erebus expected to conclude long-running discussions with AMG Customer Sports over an extension of its current agreement to run Mercedes-Benz E63 AMGs.
