Polestar’s racing and performance road car arms are set to be split following a buy-in from Volvo Cars.
Volvo has announced a 100 percent acquisition of the formerly Christian Dahl-owned Polestar company, which has worked alongside the Swedish manufacturer for the last 19 years.
Polestar’s racing operations will, however, be renamed and remain under Dahl’s control.
The racing team runs a multi-car squad in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship, while also providing engineering support to Garry Rogers Motorsport’s V8 Supercars efforts.
Volvo’s move to leave the racing arm out of the acquisition comes after last December announcing plans to exit the STCC ‘as soon as the contract permits’ on the basis that motorsport ‘does not conform with our brand’.
Volvo Australia is yet to confirm its plans for V8 Supercars beyond the end of its current deal with GRM, which expires after next season.
Upon announcing the sale of the Polestar performance arm and brand, Dahl said his focus will now return to racing.
“We are extremely satisfied with the way the performance business with Volvo has developed, but we are a racing team first and foremost,” said Dahl.
“This is an opportunity to return our full attention to our core business – to develop and race Volvo cars.”
Volvo expects to sell 750 Polestar versions of the V60 wagon and S60 sedan globally this year; a number it aims to double in the ‘medium term’.
