Formula Ford graduate Sam Power will step into the Team BRM drive formerly occupied by Nick Percat for the 2014 Carrera Cup Australia.

The 25-year-old South Australian finished third in last year’s Australian Formula Ford Championship standings with Synergy Motorsport.

He will have his first taste of the new-generation 911 GT3 Cup Car at Sydney Motorsport Park later this week, where the category is undertaking its pre-season hand-over process.

“It’s a huge honour and a privilege to be racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia,” said Power.

“It’s a pivotal point in my career as Carrera Cup is one of the best feeder categories on the way to my ultimate goal of V8 Supercars, and it also offers me a chance to expand on corporate opportunities outside of driving the car.

“For me, the Porsche program is a perfect fit.

“The pedigree in Formula Ford last year was fantastic, but if you look at the list of people that will be racing in Carrera Cup this year, it’s epic.

“This year represents an incredible opportunity to race against and learn from some drivers that I idolise as well as the upcoming young talent.”

Power, who skipped karts prior to embarking on his open-wheel career, is cautious about setting targets for the season.

“It is very difficult to set goals when you are moving into such an unknown area,” he said.

“Naturally you want to be as competitive as you can but you have to be realistic.

“With that in mind, I have had very limited experience with the car and I have not driven ‘tin-top’ cars for three or four years so we will be taking it round-by-round.

“If we can evolve that over the year then who knows what we can achieve. I am excited to say the least. ”

BRM won five Carrera Cup races in 2013 with Percat, who finished second in the series to Craig Baird.

Percat has this year moved on to the V8 Supercars Championship, where he will drive for Walkinshaw Racing.

BRM is expeceted to again run a second Carrera Cup entry for Duvashen Padayachee, who finished eighth in the 2013 season.

The South Australian outfit is also understood to be assessing the feasibility of adding a third entry.

Its Porsche program runs alongside its Formula 3 team, which last year took its seventh title in 12 years.
