Provisional pole for Frosty ahead of Shootout

Mark Winterbottom will be the last man out in the Shootout

Mark Winterbottom will be the last man out in the Shootout

Mark Winterbottom set the fastest time during Race 17 qualifying in Townsville as all four Prodrive Fords locked themselves into the Top 10 Shootout.

Saturday’s winner edged out team-mates Chaz Mostert and David Reynolds at the top of the order, while Andre Heimgartner ended up ninth.

Mostert and Reynolds held the top two spots ahead of the final green tyre runs, but failed to improve their earlier times.

Winterbottom meanwhile shot to the top with just over a minute remaining; his 1:13.24s proving 0.06s clear of Mostert.

“It was an interesting session because normally it gets quicker but the track lost a little bit of speed,” noted Winterbottom post-session.

“But we’ve got four cars in there and it’s awesome to continue yesterday’s form.”

Kiwis Scott McLaughlin, Fabian Coulthard and Shane van Gisbergen filled fourth through sixth, with Todd Kelly, Lee Holdsworth, Heimgartner and Will Davison completing the top 10.

Those to miss the Shootout include Red Bull team-mates Jamie Whincup (13th) and Craig Lowndes (23rd).

“The car wasn’t flash, I thought I’d be P20 to be honest so I’m happy to be in the middle,” said Whincup. “Yesterday was good in qualy but we’ve made a step backwards today.”

Lowndes meanwhile had two sets of tyres up his sleeve after doing just one run in Saturday qualifying, but again only elected to use one set.

“We made an adjustment and it didn’t ride kerbs, it was really bouncing,” he lamented. “But them’s the breaks.”

Also down the order was DJR Team Penske’s Scott Pye, who failed to continue his Saturday form with a lacklustre 17th.
