Dick Johnson Racing’s Scott Pye has topped the first of four Friday practice sessions for the V8 Supercars at the Castrol Edge Gold Coast 600.
The #16 Ford’s 1:11.4s best was set after the chequered flag fell, edging previous fast-man Craig Lowndes by 0.22s.
Pye’s car, sporting a pink McGrath Foundation livery this weekend, arrived at the Surfers Paradise circuit yesterday after extensive post-Bathurst repairs.
Michael Caruso and Rick Kelly were third and fourth fastest respectively in an encouraging start for the Nissan Altimas.
Kelly was one of several drivers to receive a 60 second stop-go penalty for excessive kerb use as the field explored the new tyre bundle/kerb sensor combination in the chicanes.
Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen spent brief periods at the top of the order on their way to fifth and sixth, while Fabian Coulthard, James Moffat, James Courtney and Chaz Mostert completed the top 10.
The 25 primary drivers were the only ones to take to the wheel in Practice 1, with the next two sessions earmarked for the co-drivers only.
