Roland Dane backs V8’s return to Eastern Creek

TeamVodafone celebrates Jamie Whincup

TeamVodafone celebrates Jamie Whincup’s Race 19 win at Sydney Motorsport Park today

TeamVodafone boss Roland Dane has lauded the V8 Supercars’ return to Sydney Motorsport Park, stating that he wishes to see the event retain a place on the future calendars.

The western Sydney circuit, formally known as Eastern Creek, made its comeback to the V8 calendar this weekend, with 24,341 people attending the shortened two-day meeting.

The meeting saw TeamVodafone dominate proceedings, with Craig Lowndes winning yesterday and his team-mate Jamie Whincup taking victory today.

Dane says that western Sydney circuit deserves to be retained on the V8 calendar.

“Most definitely, in my opinion, it should be on the calendar,” the team owner and V8 board member said.

“I think it’s a great circuit. It’s a good flowing track, a proper motor racing circuit. Also, it’s the only permanent circuit in the Sydney basin, so we should be supporting it. We should be here, I hope we are here in the future, I think it has been a good return, considering it was only put on the calendar four months ago.

“It was good to see a good, enthusiastic crowd – real avid race fans.

“I’m a big supporter and I hope we’re back here next year and every year.”

With the shape of the 2013 V8 schedule beginning to firm up, Dane says that more two-day meetings should be considered for permanent Australian race circuits in the future.

“I believe this is a very good format for some of these (permanent) circuits,” he said.

“There was a lot of track action. I would have liked to see a couple more sets of tyres in everyone’s cupboards, so the track sessions were meaningful for the fans.

“I think it’s a very good format in the right circumstances. Short and sharp, plenty of action going on. It reduces the number of days that people in race teams are away, and as we go to more races, that’s going to take the pressure off too.”

The next event of the V8 Supercars Championship will be the Dick Smith Sandown 500, to be held on September 14-16.
