Valentino Rossi is in doubt for the San Marino Grand Prix with reports from Italy claiming he has broken his tibia and fibula in a training crash.
The Italian is said to have sustained the injuries to his right leg while riding in an endurance motocross event near his home town of Tavullia, and was taken to nearby Ospedale Civile di Urbino.
Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Rossi sustained a “suspected fracture of the tibia and fibula” and will undergo surgery on Friday local time.
Rossi’s factory Yamaha team has not yet confirmed the extent of the injuries, but has confirmed that a crash occurred.
“Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team rider Valentino Rossi was involved in an enduro accident, during a training activity close to his hometown, on Thursday, August 31st,” read a statement from the team.
“The 38-year-old Italian rider was taken to the ‘Ospedale Civile di Urbino’ for a check-up.
“A further medical bulletin will be issued in due course.”
The San Marino Grand Prix will take place on September 8-10.
