Sergey Sirotkin will take part in opening practice for this weekend’s Russian Grand Prix after landing a test driver role with the Renault Formula 1 team.
The 20-year-old is set to compete in several practice sessions this season as part of the development driver arrangement, beginning with a run in Kevin Magnussen’s car at Sochi.
Sirotkin will dovetail his F1 commitments alongside a GP2 campaign with the ART operation, co-founded by Renault F1 director Frederic Vasseur.
The Russian finished third overall in his rookie year in the F1 feeder series last year.
Sirotkin is no stranger to F1 machinery having made his practice debut with Sauber at the 2014 Russian Grand Prix.
“This is a great opportunity for me, although it has all come together so quickly. I still can’t quite believe it,” said Sirotkin.
“This is, however, the moment that all young racing drivers are working towards, and I am determined to learn as much as I can, as quickly as I can, doing the best possible job for the team while driving in Free Practice 1.
“Renault Sport, which I would like to thank, has shown many times that it is the best place for a driver to start his Formula 1 career, and I intend to make the most of this opportunity.”
Friday’s opening practice is scheduled to begin at 1700 AEST.
