The Dunlop Sprint tyres will be used in Sunday races only in this year’s V8 Supercars Championship Series.
Last year, teams were given one set of the soft compound ‘yellow-banded’ tyres to use in any of the two races.
At last Thursday’s V8 Supercar Board meeting – the first time the board has met this year – it was decided that the Sprint tyres will only be permitted to be used in Sunday’s 200km race format.
This rule will apply in four rounds of the championship at Queensland Raceway, Hidden Valley, Symmons Plains and Sandown.
As reported earlier, the soft tyre is the only tyre the teams will compete on at Winton and Barbagallo Raceways.
The new rule takes away some of the ‘random’ outcomes that were common under last year’s rule where drivers and teams were forced to sacrifice one race to be competitive in the other.
In addition, teams will get an extra set of soft tyres for use in Friday practice session only at Queensland Raceway – the first round of the year where the Sprint tyre will be races on.
In other tyre rules changes, the Board has approved the allocation of a total of 24 new control tyres for testing and practice for 2010. Teams will collect eight tyres per car for the pre-season test day, with the remaining 16 tyres available after the return from the Middle East.
Also, tyres allocated to teams at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix support race will not be able to be added to their tyre bank.
