Kostecki, who had been quickest in the preceding qualifying session, came up 0.1331s short of Waters’ timesheet topper – a 1:06.0383s in the #6 Tickford Racing Mustang.

The #17 Dick Johnson Racing Ford driver was fastest to the first sector but made a mistake at Turn 6 before running wide at Turn 11.

“It’s been way too long but I was super happy with that lap,” said Waters.

“I just wanted to get through (Turn) 1 ok, I got through there better than I did in quali and I knew I was pretty on from that point on.

“It’s been a struggle this year. Yesterday was awesome for us and to get pole for this race sets us up really well.”

Matt Payne maintained position from qualifying ot the Top 10 Shootout, logging the third-fastest lap for Grove Racing.

Broc Feeney improved two places to sixth for Triple Eight in a much-needed bounce back. He had been as low as 17th in Q1 before improving to eighth in Q2.

The running order was completed by Jack Le Brocq (Matt Stone Racing), Thomas Randle (Tickford Racing), James Golding (Blanchard Racing Team) and Zach Bates (Matt Stone Racing).

Randle suffered the biggest session-on-session slump, down four places from fourth to eighth.
