Shane Van Gisbergen added to his maiden Supercars title triumph by winning the Armor All Pole Champion Award.

The Red Bull Racing Australia driver was one of three drivers in contention for the award alongside team-mate Jamie Whincup and Prodrive’s Chaz Mostert.

The honour is awarded to the competitor with the most pole positions during the campaign.

Van Gisbergen took his tally to seven poles after topping qualifying on Saturday, which saw him go head-to-head for the overall award with Whincup, a six-time previous winner, in Sunday’s final qualifying session.

Garth Tander claimed the final pole which handed the Armor All Pole Champion Award and $10,000 in prize money to the newly crowned Supercars champion.

Van Gisbergen qualified second in the Top 10 Shootout as Whincup made an error at Turn 1 on his flying lap.

“It’s pretty awesome (to win the Armor All Pole Champion Award),” said van Gisbergen.

“That was going to be a showdown, I knew Jamie would be on it.

“He made a mistake and so did I on my lap. I was on a good one and mucked up the chicane, I  came out in third gear instead of second.”

Van Gisbergen becomes the sixth different driver to take out the award joining Mark Skaife (2006), Mark Winterbottom (2007), Jamie Whincup (2008-2011, 2013-2014), Will Davison (2012) and Chaz Mostert (2015).
