The Toll Holden Racing Team has repaired Garth Tander’s Commodore VE after its heavy crash at Sandown Raceway yesterday.
Tander left the road at high speed and hit the wall at safety wall at the end of the back straight. The team stated that the impact was at 265kmh.
The cause of the crash was due to a rub with eventual race winner Paul Dumbrell on the opening lap of the race. The clash cut Tander’s right front tyre, leaving him with no chance to pull his #2 Commodore up at the end of the straight.
Tander was seething after his accident.
“PD went off at turn one then came back on at turn three pretty aggressively and dangerously,” he said.
“I saw him coming off the grass and gave him room, but he just turned into me and something cut the tyre. You can’t really feel the tyres going off at speed, but up the back straight I heard it go and got on the brakes as soon as I could, but that was it.
“I’m fine, the tyre wall did a very good job and the improvements they’ve made over there worked well.
“It was all a bit unnecessary by PD to be so aggressive, he made a mistake at the start and while he should have paid a penalty he cost us instead.”
V8 action at Sandown today starts 11.15am, followed by Race 24 of the V8 Supercars Championship Series at 3.05pm.
