Chaz Mostert believes Tickford Racing’s current lack of results is because the team is struggling to get the FGX Falcon working on the 2016 tyres.

Mostert was the leading driver from the four-car squad, before banking a fifth place finish in Race 9 of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship on Saturday.

Sunday proved more difficult, slipping to 11th in qualifying before coming home in eighth in the 57-lap race, the only Tickford driver to finish inside the top 10 in either race.

“It’s probably not a bad result for the stuff we’re dealing with out there,” Mostert reasoned.

“As a whole team we’re really struggling with getting this car to react to this new tyre this year.

“It’s something we’ve got to go back to the workshop and do something completely different. But in saying that, I was hanging on for dear life out there, just trying to make it work somehow, doing stuff drivers don’t necessarily like to do in race cars.

“You like to be smooth and look after things, but (Phillip Island was) all about aggression in trying to make this car work.

“Not bad results, not where we want to be, that’s for sure. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Mostert’s summation was shared by team principal Tim Edwards.

“We’ve done a lot of figuring out how not to make the cars work, but haven’t found the combination to get what we need out of them,” Edwards confessed.

“It hasn’t been for a lack of effort, but we’ve got to keep working at it. We know we’re better than we’ve shown, we owe it to our fans, partners, and ourselves.

“The team will be hard at work trying to find a solution, and hopefully we’ll have something to cheer about in Perth.”

Mostert sits seventh in the drivers’ standings, the highest placed of Tickford’s drivers, with Winterbottom 14th, Waters 16th, and Stanaway 26th.
