V8 Supercars has completed its Dunlop tyre test at Queensland Raceway as the category continues to assess its compound and format options for next season.
Reigning V8 Supercars champion Jamie Whincup was tasked with testing four different compounds, consisting of two versions of a new ‘super soft’ and two revisions of the current tyres.
Utilising Red Bull’s ride car, Whincup completed a 20 lap stint on each set before running a number of qualifying simulations.
Data gained from the outings is due to be analysed by the V8 Supercars Commission before final decisions on next year’s race formats are made.
The super soft compounds had originally been imported by Dunlop last August, before being shelved amid a decision to cut back tyre allocations this year.
While V8 Supercars and Dunlop declined to comment on today’s test, Whincup told Speedcafe.com that the day went smoothly.
“We went round and round and got some good information which will now be filtered to the other teams and put to the Commission to see if they want to change the compounds,” said the six-time champion.
“We feel like we are doing a good thing for the category and if we can find something better (than the current tyres) then happy days.
“Apart from the lack of tyres I don’t disagree with what we have got but I’m all for trying to find something better.
“I don’t think we are trying to fix an issue we are just trying to get to a better place.”
Whincup also completed a 60km shakedown of Red Bull’s new chassis during the afternoon.
The team will return to the track tomorrow for its scheduled test day alongside the customer Holden of Tekno Autosport.
