V8 Supercars’ in-house media arm has been appointed as the television production service for the upcoming KL City GP.

Supercars Media, which has produced the V8 Supercars Championship coverage for the last eight years, was awarded the contract by event promoter GT Global Race.

While there will be no live television coverage into Australia, it is claimed that the event will be broadcast to a potential audience of 1.2 billion.

Five V8 Supercars will complete a demonstration at the inaugural KL City GP ahead of a planned championship event from 2016.

V8 Supercars’ media and events businesses are seen as potential growth areas for the company, as witnessed by its impending takeover of the Bathurst 12 Hours.

“Supercars Media is the world leader in motorsports broadcasting and we are proud to be able to produce the very first KL City Grand Prix,” said V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton.

“It’s a fantastic endorsement of the team that produces such a brilliant TV product in Australia. It also showcases the tremendous breadth of capability within the V8 Supercars business.”

KL City GP organisers meanwhile held a press conference at City Hall on Monday in a bid to combat a spate of negative reports about the event in local media.

Complaints from local businesses about the construction of the circuit and the resulting access restrictions have been widespread ahead of the August 7-9 event.

“When the race starts, people will see how exciting an event like this will be,” event ambassador Alex Yoong told local media.

“I hope those working in the city will deal with this with an open mind. The first race could be messy but it will surely improve in future.”

In addition to the V8 Supercars demo, the race meeting will feature the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Series, Formula Masters China Series and GT Global’s own KL GT City Cup, for GT3 and GT4 machinery.
