V8 Supercars chairman Tony Cochrane has confirmed that the V8s will not twin its race at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas with another race in that region next year.
Speedcafe.com reported in June that there were discussions regarding the V8s competing in Mexico City, one week after the landmark Texas event.
Any plans for a back-to-back meeting, though, have been disbanded, with the V8 Supercars’ Texas race looking set to be held on May 17-19 – one week before the Indianapolis 500.
While Cochrane says that he has fielded interest from other circuits within the region, there will be no second race in 2013.
“We have had interest from other parts of North America, Mexico and South America, but nobody at this stage has been talking to us about twinning with Austin for next year,” Cochrane told Speedcafe.com.
“We’re going all that way, so sure, it makes sense to do another race in that part of the world, and in the longer term, we may look at going to a North American or South American country, certainly.”
Cochrane confirmed that the V8’s race at the under-construction Texas track will be in May, stating that the official date could be released by the Circuit of the Americas in “two or three weeks” time.
“There has been a lot of interest in the race, and I have tried to indicate to the fan base that it will be around May,” Cochrane said.
“I would hope that within the next two to three weeks, they make an announcement of the date.”
The V8 Supercars Championship continues this weekend with the return of the class to Sydney Motorsport Park (Eastern Creek). The V8 Supercars hit the track for the first time on Saturday morning.
