Shane van Gisbergen’s quest to avenge a heartbreaking Bathurst 1000 is off to a strong start, with the Tekno Holden flying to the fastest time in Friday practice on the Gold Coast.
The Tekno Holden driver moved to the top of the order shortly after the resumption from a red flag period with 10 of the 30 minutes remaining, recording a 1:10.64s.
The Kiwi proved the only man able to lower that benchmark in the final minutes, improving to a 1:10.47s with the chequered flag flying.
Second fastest man James Courtney was a full 0.35s adrift, while David Reynolds, Jamie Whincup and Bathurst winner Chaz Mostert completed the top five.
Kerb infringements were again frequent throughout the session, with 29 pit lane time penalties imposed throughout the course of the day.
Friday’s only red flag was called with 10 minutes remaining to fix the tyre bundle at Turn 1 after it had been knocked onto the circuit.
The V8 Supercars will return to the circuit for qualifying tomorrow at 1135 local time.
