The Mobil 1 HSV Racing squad heads to Darwin next weekend hopeful of improved performances on track despite electing to sit out Tuesday’s test.
“Everyone’s working hard and confident that what we’re working on will hopefully show some performance at Darwin,” acting Team Principal Mathew Nilsson told Speedcafe.com.
“Of course we go to Darwin with some confidence in what we’re doing but until we get there you’re not going to know.”
The Holden squad still has two of its three test days up its sleeve courtesy of not going testing this week, though Nilsson is in no rush when it comes to using them.
“There’s obviously certain options that are available through the calendar, so like everyone else you just pick the opportunities and we’ll choose an appropriate time when we feel it’s possible,” Nilsson explained.
“You’re so limited on test days that you’ve got to make sure that you’re going to go there and maximise the benefit of going testing.
“For us, it was about making sure that we had a solid programme and development items in place.
“We’re still working on that and just thought it was better to use the time more efficiently here in the workshop and keep developing here and keep focussing on that and look at a test day when we feel it’s more appropriate.”
The team’s best result has been a solitary podium for James Courtney at the season-opening Clipsal 500.
Both Courtney and team-mate Scott Pye languish outside of the top 15 in the points standings, with two 10th place finishes the squad’s best results since leaving the Adelaide streets.
Nilsson says he’s still not considered the prospect of taking on the role permanently.
“Like I said at the time at Winton, I’m not even thinking about it, to be honest,” he insisted.
“My focus is to work on improving the team overall, technically and the team itself.
“We’ve all got our jobs to do and everyone’s just focussing on that.”
