Mobil 1 HSV Racing has prepared a different chassis for James Courtney at this weekend’s Winton Super Sprint.

Courtney publicly criticised his car at Barbagallo Raceway claiming the Commodore (WR21) was ‘possessed’, following on from remarks made by former Walkinshaw driver Garth Tander, who drove the car last year.

The claims were refuted by team owner Ryan Walkinshaw following Race 8 in Perth, who said the chassis, which was rebuilt during the off-season had passed necessary tests.

However, in the lead up to Winton a decision was made to ready WR20 for Courtney which he last drove in 2015.

The car (WR22) he started this season with is undergoing repairs following the 12-car pile up at Symmons Plains in April.

The move arrives just days after the high-profile sacking of team principal Adrian Burgess with the squad’s GT department manager Mathew Nilsson now in charge while a permanent successor is found.

Courtney told Speedcafe.com earlier this week that the team needs to adopt a back to basics approach this weekend, which has been echoed by Nilsson.

“It will be great to get back on track this weekend, getting back to racing,” said Nilsson in a team preview.

“For us, it’s a back to basics approach. We must do the basics right, and do them well.

“We know this isn’t going to be an overnight fix, but it’s important for us to move forward, and start making progression up the field with some strong race results.

“We have complete faith in the team we have here, and we know they are going to give everything they have to regain that speed. Everyone is certainly in this together with the same goals in mind.”

The Winton Super Sprint begins on Friday with an additional driver practice session with Walkinshaw co-drivers Warren Luff and Jack Perkins set to take part.
