Whincup/Dumbrell secure pole for Sandown 500

Whincup and Dumbrell will start Sunday

Whincup and Dumbrell will start Sunday’s 500 from pole

A victory for Jamie Whincup in the second qualifying race has secured pole for himself and co-driver Paul Dumbrell ahead of Sunday’s Wilson Security Sandown 500.

Whincup repeated Dumbrell’s effort from the opening qualifying heat, leading all 20 laps from pole.

Unlike Dumbrell’s seven second victory, the five-time champion had to work hard for his win, fending off a spirited challenge from Shane van Gisbergen.

The Kiwi started second courtesy of Jonathon Webb’s charge in the co-driver race and appeared to have the faster car in the early laps.

Unable to find a way by, the margin between the duo hovered between 0.5 and 1.5 seconds until the chequered flag.

“It’s actually quite refreshing to have a race without points,” said Whincup after a perfect day for the #1 Holden.

“You just go hard and rag it and see what happens. I really enjoyed it.”

Mark Winterbottom finished third, seven seconds in arrears of Whincup, after fending off Scott McLaughlin’s Volvo in what proved a processional race among the front-runners.

Garth Tander, James Courtney, Craig Lowndes, David Reynolds, Tim Slade and Fabian Coulthard completed the top 10.

The most spirited dice broke out late in the going for 14th and was won by Rick Kelly.

The Jack Daniel’s Nissan picked its way through Jason Bright and Nick Percat, while Chaz Mostert, Will Davison and Scott Pye also joined in on the action.

Russell Ingall had earlier been turned around on the opening corner of the race, leaving the veteran to finish 24th.

The V8 Supercars will return to the track for a 20 minute warm-up session on Sunday morning before the afternoon’s 500.
