WORLD WRAP: Davies too good in WSBK in Germany

Chaz Davies takes his second win of the weekend

Superbike World Championship

Chaz Davies has swept Round 8 of the Superbike World Championship at the Lausitzring in Germany.

Davies started only sixth in Race 1 but carved his way through to the lead on Lap 2, and the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati rider rode on to a 1.8s victory over Kawasaki Racing Team pair Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes.

The following day, having been put back to ninth on the grid as per World SBK’s Race 2 reverse grid format, Davies again made his way to the front in a race made challenging by light rain falling during the latter laps.

Rea finished second again, extending his championship lead over team-mate Sykes, while early leader Marco Melandri took the second factory Ducati to third.

Round 10 of 13 sees World SBK head to southern Europe, to Portugal’s Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, on September 15-17.

Timo Glock

DTM

Timo Glock and Mike Rockenfeller were classified as race winners in a controversial weekend of DTM at Zandvoort in Holland.

Glock led a BMW sweep of the podium in Saturday’s race, the German leading compatriot Marco Wittmann and Belgian Maxime Martin all the way aside from pit stops.

Glock was then excluded from Sunday qualifying after a run-in with Mercedes’ Edoardo Mortara, taking exception at what he thought was a baulk and then responding in kind.

Wittmann originally took victory, just holding out Audi’s Rockenfeller, but was subsequently excluded after stewards were unable to take a fuel sample from his car in parc ferme.

Mattias Ekstrom (Audi) leads the championship with three rounds remaining, the next at the Nurburgring on September 8-10.

Blancpain GT Series Asia

Nick Foster has scored a podium finish in the fourth event of Blancpain GT Series Asia at Fuji Speedway in Japan.

In Race 1, the #777 CarGuy Racing Lamborghini Huracan of Kei Cozzolino/Naoki Yokomizo led from the first corner until the end, while a strong starting stint from Foster helped he and Devon Modell take second in the #88 Craft Bamboo Racing Porsche 991 GT3R.

The #999 GruppeM Racing Mercedes-AMG GT of Maxi Buhk/Hunter Abbott was never headed in Race 2, in which Foster/Modell finished 11th after the Australian had been handed over the car in 22nd.

Malaysian-based Australian Mitchell Gilbert and Aditya Patel finished 11th and 8th across the two races in their #86 OD Racing Audi R8 LMS.

The penultimate event will be held at the Shanghai International Circuit on September 23-24.

European Formula 3

Lando Norris and Callum Ilott shared race wins while Australian Joey Mawson had another challenging weekend in Round 7 of European Formula 3 at Zandvoort.

Norris won Race 1, leading all the way despite having to fend off Joel Eriksson after a Safety Car period, and backed up in Race 3.

However, a yellow flag infringement saw him hit with a two grid position penalty for Race 2, opening the door for Ilott to win that encounter.

Mawson’s best result of the weekend was ninth in Race 3, while he managed to finish on the lead lap in 14th in Race 2 despite a mid-race collision with Van Amersfoort Racing team-mate Pedro Piquet.

European Formula 3 now heads to the Nurburgring for Round 8 on September 9-10.

Audi Sport TT Cup

Philip Ellis and Mikel Azcona were the race winners in Round 4 of Audi Sport TT Cup at Zandvoort, while Central Coast teenager Drew Ridge finished the two races in eighth and sixth respectively.

Ridge had run as high as fourth in Race 2, but faded towards the end having used up the best of his tyres.

Ellis leads the series and Ridge is ninth heading into Round 5 of 7 at the Nurburgring on September 8-10.

Super Formula

Pierre Gasly has taken victory and New Zealander Nick Cassidy fifth in Round 4 of Super Formula at the Twin Ring Motegi in Japan.

Kamui Kobayashi got the jump from second on the grid and established a 14s lead over Gasly, who was among the later stoppers when the Frenchman pitted on Lap 27.

Kobayashi waited until Lap 34 but a slow tyre change cost him half a minute and the race lead, as he rejoined behind Gasly.

Cassidy had run fifth for most of the 52-lap race, finishing one position ahead of Kondo team-mate Kenta Yamashita.

Round 5 of 7 takes place at Autopolis on September 9-10.
