WORLD WRAP: Aussies in action Stateside

Davison finished second in both PWC races

Davison finished second in both PWC races

Talented US-based Australian James Davison has finished with a pair of second places behind Ryan Dalziel in Round 14 of the Pirelli World Challenge at Mid-Ohio.

Davison, driving the #33 AE Nissan GT Academy GT-R Nismo GT3, put in some solid performances behind Porsche 911 GT3 R driver Dalziel.

In the opening 50-minute timed event, Dalziel pipped Davison by 1.8s

Olivier Beretta was third in the #61 Ferrari 458 Italia GT3.

After mounting the only serious challenge to Dalziel, Davison again found himself pursuing the Porsche pilot in the second encounter to record a fifth straight podium finish.

Dalziel has eased past Beretta in the points standings but is resigned to the fact that he will lose the lead at the next round as he is committed to the LMP2 Tequila Patron ESM squad for the WEC round at the Nurburgring from August 28-30, which clashes with Sonoma.

Scott Andrews scored a second, fourth and a DNF

Scott Andrews scored a second, fourth and a DNF

F1600 Series
Series leader Australian Scott Andrews has endured a difficult round in the F1600 Formula F Championship following Round 13 at the Pittsburgh circuit.

Andrews produced a charging drive for second behind Skylar Robinson in the opening heat of the three-race program with Jordan Cane third.

After starting from eighth, Andrews unleashed a late surge in his #94 Spectrum/Honda out of the final corner to narrowly miss the win.

In the second race Cane came through for the win ahead of Ben Auriemma, Robinson with Andrews fourth.
The quartet diced for the lead for the 16-lap journey in an absorbing tussle.

Cane landed a double for the weekend in the final heat but Andrews’ impeccable season-long form came to an end after he suffered a DNF after spearing off the circuit early in the race.

The series resumes at New Jersey Motorsports Park for another three-race format from August 28-30.

DTM

Audi pair Edoardo Mortara and Mattias Ekstrom have shared wins following a controversial round at the Red Bull Ring.

In the opening 29 lap race, Mortara beat Mercedes F1 reserve driver Pascal Wehrlein and Paul di Resta.

Rain hampered the start of the second 34 lap race with the opening five laps run under the Safety Car.

Ekstrom moved into the championship lead after a lights to flag effort to beat Gary Paffett by 4.3s while Mortara was third.

Team Phoenix Audi’s Timo Scheider was sensationally excluded from the race after his roll in dispatching Wehrlein and Robert Wickens into the gravel trap.

Stewards based their ruling on telemetry data and video footage by declaring the collision was deliberate.

Subsequently Audi motorsport chief Wolfgang Ullrich admitted that he made a call over the radio to ‘push him out’ before Scheider’s collision with the Mercedes rivals.

Stewards forwarded the incidents related to a possible unsporting instruction via radio by the Audi Team Phoenix and/or Audi Sport to the appeal court of the DMSB with the results of the second race remaining provisional.

The DTM will shift to Moscow for the next round scheduled from August 28-30.

Formula 3

Felix Rosenqvist led the Prema Powerteam to victory in the opening heat of the weekend, beating home Antonio Giovinazzi and Lance Stroll.

The result meant that Giovinazzi was able to extend his championship lead after staving off the 16-year-old Stroll’s challenges.

With heavy rain lashing the circuit the second race was red flagged after lengthy delays which saw Giovinazzi the victor over Rosenqvist and Sergio Sette Camara.

The initial stoppage came after just four laps were in the books before the race resumed under the Safety Car.  Two later proceedings were brought to a halt for good.

Giovinazzi came away with a lead of 20.5 points over Rosenqvist as he moved to 333.5 points after eight rounds.

The next round at Portimao is scheduled from September 4-6.
