Alex Davison is closing in on a deal to compete in City Index Porsche Carrera Cup this year.
The former V8 Supercars driver is speaking to two teams about making a return to the all-Porsche class that he won in 2004.
Speedcafe.com understands that his options are between McElrea Racing and Peter Hill’s team.
After being dropped by Stone Brothers Racing’s V8 Supercars program at the end of last year, Davison says that he is confident he will have a drive in a Porsche this season.
“I’m keen to do Carrera Cup, if I can,” Davison told Speedcafe.com.
“It is a matter of putting everything together, a budget and all of that, so I’m working away on that at the moment.
“Nothing is locked in. We’ll see how the next few weeks pan out, but I’m confident I’ll be able to do something.”
Davison potential addition to the Carrera Cup ranks would instantly add another leading contender to the field. Last year’s champion Craig Baird is returning, along with front-runners Steve Richards and Jonny Reid, who is expected to remain at McElrea Racing.
Reid’s 2011 team-mate Michael Patrizi will not be with McElrea, as he will announce a deal today to drive Tekno Autosports’ second V8 Supercar this year.
While Davison is looking to sure up his immediate future, he says that his ultimate goal is to make a return to the V8 Supercars Championship.
“My aim, and my hope is to get back into V8 Supercars,” he said.
“It is important that I keep racing, so I may as well put my energy into something which I really enjoy.
“Porsches are fantastic to drive, so I want to try and put something together that is beneficial to my racing and also enjoyable.”
There is also an opportunity for Davison to return to the Le Mans 24 hour sportscar event this year.
Having raced in the famous French race in 2008, Davison admitted that he has spoken to a couple of teams about competing in the race.
“There was a possibility of a drive in the World Endurance Championship drive. That fell through, so there’s still a possibility for a drive at Le Mans, and I’d be really keen for that,” he said.
“I did it once and we had mechanical problems and didn’t get the result we wanted. I’ve always wanted to go back and do that race again. If I could pull that off, it would make missing out on a full-time V8 Supercars ride worthwhile.
“We’ll see what plays out on that one.”
