
After his horrific crash at the IndyCar race at Houston, incredibly Dario Franchitti will under surgery only for his ankle injuries.
The Scotsman is expected to leave Houston’s Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Centre later in the week with his other injuries listed as two spinal fractures and concussion as well as the fractured right ankle. The spinal injuries are said to be minor and it is expected that he will make a full recovery.
The three-time series champion was launched into the fence after coming into contact with Takuma Sato. Debris was sent into the stands with 14 spectators suffering minor injuries.
A statement from the Ganassi team said that Franchitti had surgery to stabilise the damaged ankle on Sunday night.
Franchitti will be transported to Indianapolis for further evaluation after he is released from hospital in Houston. He has released a short statement of thanks.
“Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes. They mean a lot to me,” he said.
“I would also like to send my best to all the fans involved in the accident and hope that everyone is alright.”
