Ben Spies has taken his maiden MotoGP victory, winning the TT Assen.
The American, who recently re-signed a deal to continue with the factory Yamaha outfit, rewarded his team’s faith with his first win, leading from the first lap and dominating the race.
Australia’s Honda star Casey Stoner finished second, extending his lead in the world championship.
Spies’ cause was helped on the first lap when pole-sitter Marco Simoncelli collected Spies’ team-mate Jorge Lorenzo.
Both riders were able to get back on their bikes, with Lorenzo recovering to sixth and Simoncelli 12th.
Stoner’s team-mate Andrea Dovizioso finished third, ahead of Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden, Lorenzo and Colin Edwards.
