BMW set to release M6 GT3 technical update

BMW Motorsport will release a new technical update for its M6 GT3 next year.

After two years of racing the M6 GT3 is set to undergo a significant raft of improvements via an ‘Evo’ package aimed to ensure the car remains competitive in global GT3 racing.

BMW engineers have focussed on improving the driveablilty particularly for non-professional drivers while widening the optimisation window of the car.

The updates are also expected to improve the durability of several parts.

An improvement in overall performance will be achieved by replacing a number of components on the M6 GT3, while others will be modified.

Testing of the update at Germany’s Laustziring has produced impressive results.

All modifications are subject to final homologation by the FIA.

“The BMW M6 GT3 will remain the flagship in the BMW customer racing product range and our top model for the prestigious 24-hour races at the Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps in 2018 and beyond,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt.

“We are working on an Evo package, to provide our customer racing teams with an even better car.

“The latest tests at the Lausitzring showed that we have made a big step forward, particularly in terms of driveability.”

The news is likely to boost BMW Team SRM’s hopes for the Australian GT Championship and next year’s Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour.

The squad, led by Steven Richards, has struggled for performance in this year’s Australian GT Championship with the operation yet to score a podium finish.

“We’re hugely excited to have this update package on the way,” said Richards.

“It’s an important step for the BMW M6 GT3.

“In GT3 racing there is as an opportunity once in a model cycle to look make big improvements, so it’s very encouraging to see such excellent feedback coming from the drivers and team behind the development.

“We’ve been working very hard here in Australia to be as competitive as possible in Australian GT, so between that hard work and the Evo package that’s on its way next year, we have a lot to look forward to.”
