Coulthard, Winterbottom share Sunday poles

Mark Winterbottom will start Race 34 from pole

Fabian Coulthard and Mark Winterbottom will start on pole for Races 33 and 34 respectively at Phillip Island after Sunday morning’s back-to-back qualifying sessions.

Coulthard edged out his Brad Jones Racing team-mate Jason Bright in the first of the two 15 minute sessions.

Bright’s first of two runs produced a 1:31.04s, which stood as the fastest until Coulthard went 0.19s quicker with under two minutes remaining.

Mark Winterbottom and Jamie Whincup will share the second row for Race 33 ahead of Chaz Mostert, Shane van Gisbergen, David Wall, Craig Lowndes, Alex Davison and David Reynolds.

Reynolds’ effort came despite shredding a right-rear tyre in the opening minutes of the session.

Whincup also endured a wild moment; making minor contact with James Moffat’s Nissan in a mid-session squabble for space.

An engine problem for Garth Tander saw Saturday’s winner pit bound for the majority of the 15 minutes.

He returned to the track for two late flying laps; the first of which proved good enough for 14th.

In the second session it was Winterbottom throwing down the gauntlet early, recording a competitive 1:31.02s on his first run with a used set of tyres.

Lowndes and Coulthard demoted Winterbottom to third with their second runs, only to see Winterbottom vault back to the top with a pole-winning 1:30.68s.

The result ensures that Winterbottom and Lowndes will share the front-row just a day after their clash in Race 32.

With the Race 32 result still subject to a protest from Red Bull, Winterbottom quipped via his team radio post-session: “Roland (Dane) will want to go to the stewards because we’re too quick!”

Bright ended up demoting Coulthard to fourth for Race 34, with Whincup, Van Gisbergen, Scott Pye, Michael Caruso, Chaz Mostert and Will Davison completing the top 10.

Races 33 and 34 will get underway at 1350 and 1620 respectively.
