The three-time class winner ousted title advisory Alex Davison by 0.147s.
Lining up third will be Nick Foster in his Money Choice-backed entry – his best qualifying performance in the class.
Jonny Reid will start fourth ahead of Daniel Gaunt, who is suffering from a bout of food poisoning.
Guest driver Troy Wilson has been forced out of the event due to a license issue.
