Dale Wood has joined Sonic Motorsport for this year’s Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup Australia series as part of a five-car entry from the Victorian outfit.
It marks Wood’s first full-time venture into the one-make series after a career that has included two stints in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship main game, and a Dunlop Super2 Series title in 2013.
He joins fellow ex-Supercars full-timer James Moffat in the category after the former GRM driver confirmed his place on the grid with Wall Racing last month.
“I really like the way that Carrera Cup do so many things,” Wood said.
“I’ve reached a point in my life where I just want to enjoy my racing and I see this direction as the best way to do that.
“I can’t wait to get after it in these cars. I’ve never heard anyone get out of a Cup Car and say ‘well that was disappointing.’ The more I think about it the more I’m looking forward to it.”
Alongside Wood, Sonic’s fleet includes cars for Michael Almond, Australian GT winner Peter Major, Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge graduate Jordan Love, and Graham Williams, who did selected events last season.
“We’ve got a really exciting line-up in 2018, it’s a great blend of youth, experience, aggression and consistency.” said team boss Michael Ritter.
“We’re a busy team and that’s how we roll. I think it’s how we work best actually. We’re all up for the challenge.”
The team spent two days at Winton earlier this week testing the Gen II Porsche GT3 Cup car, the latest in a string of outings for the Carrera Cup field which has also seen teams testing at Queensland Raceway, Wakefield Park, Sydney Motorsport Park, and Phillip Island.
The new season kicks off at the Adelaide 500 on March 1-4.
