The make up of next year’s Formula 1 grid is slowly taking shape with Romain Grosjean hoping to confirm his 2015 plans at this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix.
The Frenchman is understood to have an opportunity to extend his stay at Lotus but has been evaluating his options before committing to the Enstone squad for a fourth season.
If Grosjean remains at Lotus for next season he will line up alongside Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado once again.
“It (an announcement) should be coming soon; hopefully this weekend, we are close,” said Grosjean leading up to this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix.
It has emerged Sauber refugee Esteban Gutierrez could fill the void left by Grosjean if the seat becomes available.
The Swiss squad confirmed it will replace Gutierrez and Adrian Sutil with Brazilian GP2 ace Felipe Nasr and Caterham refugee Marcus Ericsson for next year.
“At the moment (my F1 options are) quite slim,” said Gutierrez.
“There is probably only one seat available.
“We’ve been working on that, and other things, which require a bit more patience and some risk.”
Sebastian Vettel’s departure from Red Bull to the unconfirmed destination of Ferrari has seen Fernando Alonso linked to an increasingly likely move to McLaren.
Alonso has said there is no deadline for the announcement of his plans but maintains his move will become clear shortly.
“I don’t think that there’s a deadline to do anything,” said Alonso.
“It’s the same thing always, but the most important is that, as I said in Japan, two or three months ago I took a decision, I followed that direction and hopefully you will know soon.”
Alonso’s likely move to McLaren has left Jenson Button’s future hanging in the balance with the 2009 world champion being tipped to make way at the Woking squad.
McLaren is yet to agree new contracts with it’s drivers Button and rookie Kevin Magnussen with the latter emerging as the team’s preferred option for 2015.
While Button’s F1 future is up in the air, the 34-year-old has continued to hint at the possibility of tackling new challenges in the near future.
“When you are put in a position that many drivers have been in over the year, not sure if your contract is going to be renewed, it opens your eyes to different challenges and different possibilities,” said Button.
“Whether it is racing, whether it is doing another sport, or something different altogether, for me I am excited about the challenges ahead.
“I have a lot that I am excited about, a lot of different ideas, whether it is for next year or the year after.”
Meanwhile, Sergio Perez is closing in on a contract extension with Force India which he hopes will be announced leading up to the final round of the season at Abu Dhabi.
“Things are moving on so I really hope by next week we can finalise everything,” said Perez.
“Nothing is confirmed yet, but hopefully we can be in a position to announce my plans soon with the team or someone else.”
Red Bull, Mercedes, Sauber and Williams are the only teams to confirm driver line ups for next season.
Toro Rosso is yet to confirm the identity of the driver that will partner new teenage recruit Max Verstappen, with Jean-Eric Vergne, Carlos Sainz Jr, Antonio Felix da Costa and Alex Lynn being linked to the seat.
Despite featuring on an FIA entry list for next season, it remains unclear if Caterham and Marussia will be on the grid having been plunged into administration last month. Marussia is listed under the team’s original name Manor Grand Prix on the list.
