Paul Dumbrell sizzles to Dunlop Series pole

Paul Dumbrell has claimed pole position for the Wilson MedicOne Dunlop Series Enduro after making category history at Mount Panorama.

Dumbrell became the first man to lap Mount Panorama in the 2:06s bracket in the second-tier V8 Supercars series and will thus start from the opposite end of the grid to the #1 Triple Eight Commodore which he will co-drive with Jamie Whincup in Sunday’s Bathurst 1000.

The Eggleston Motorsport driver recorded a 2:06.9937 on his second and final timed lap of the half-hour qualifying session, sitting out the final 20 minutes as the rest of the field tried and failed to get anywhere near the Royal Wolf Commodore.

Chris Pither will share the front row thanks to a 2:07.8282 lap at the halfway mark, the Ice Break Racing Commodore spending most of the session second on the time sheets.

Andrew Jones fell less than tenth short of teammate Pither to take third, ensuring that five of the six Brad Jones Racing Commodores will start from the top ten in their respective V8 Supercars races after all three made the Top 10 Shootout for The Great Race.

Cameron Waters, who briefly held second, will start from the outside of the second row, while Ashley Walsh, Garry Jacobson, Super Black Racing drivers Ant Pedersen and Andre Heimgartner (driving for rival DVS teams), Todd Hazelwood, and Geoff Emery complete the top ten for the 250km enduro.

The session was marred by two red flags, the first after seven minutes when DVS debutante Ryal Harris looped his Matt Stone Racing Falcon at Skyline, and the second when Jack Le Brocq brought a premature end to the session as he slapped the wall under The Tree with four minutes remaining.

The Dunlop Series – Wilson MedicOne Enduro will be held over 41 laps from 1300 tomorrow.
