Retired Irish F1 driver Eddie Irvine has received a six-month prison term over a fight in Italy almost six years ago.
Irvine, 48, was found guilty following a brawl at a Milan nightclub in 2008 in which the son of a former mayor of the city was injured.
It has been reported that Irvine and another person involved in the fight are not expected to serve any jail time with the sentence to be suspended.
Irvine drove for Jordan, Ferrari and Jaguar during his F1 career which spanned from 1993 to 2002.
His career in grand prix racing at times proved turbulent including an incident with the late Ayrton Senna who punched Irvine following the Irishman’s debut at the Japanese GP at Suzuka in 1993.
Irvine managed to win four F1 races during his career, all occurring in 1999 while serving his Michael Schumacher’s team-mate at Ferrari when he finished second in the championship behind McLaren’s Mika Hakkinen.
