Erebus Motorsport will complete the full Australian GT Championship schedule this season with Melbourne-based youngster Richard Muscat.

The 21-year-old dominated last year’s Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, scoring 13 from 18 race wins on the way to the title.

Muscat was expected to step up to the Carrera Cup this season with backer John Morriss having placed an order on one of the new Type 991 Porsches.

“We looked at a number of options for this year, not just in Australia,” said Muscat.

“Initially we were going to go the next step and join the Carrera Cup field, but after testing the SLS at Winton last year and going to Macau to see the event there, I was just blown away with how good the whole Erebus program is.

“After that I knew that’s what I wanted to do.”

In addition to last year’s Winton test, Muscat also cut laps with the team at Phillip Island last week.

Erebus competed in just a handful of AGTC races in 2013, campaigning a single car for Jack Le Brocq.

The team is yet to confirm what it will do with its second car this year, with offshore events, such as last year’s GT Asia foray, still being discussed.

Muscat will not be a part of the team for next month’s Bathurst 12 Hour, however, with the team’s driver line-up already full.

Erebus general manager Barry Ryan says he’s looking forward to fighting for the team’s first AGTC title.

“This year we think we have the right driver and the right package to go after the championship,” he said.

“Richard’s ability is without question. To have won two championships (2012 Victorian Porsche 944 Challenge Series and 2013 GT3 Cup) so convincingly in his rookie season is incredible enough, but to do it with a better than two-thirds win ratio for every race he started and without getting a mark on the car, that’s impressive.

“He has had a few laps now in the SLS, but we haven’t been able to let him loose yet to see what he can really do, but after the success we had with fellow Erebus Academy graduate Jack Le Brocq last year, I think Richard will adapt very quickly and I expect he’ll be the form driver in GT this year.”

The AGTC season will get underway at the Sandown Shannons Nationals event on March 28-30.
