Australian Formula Ford team Evans Motorsport Group has formed a sub-squad to its national team – the Evans Young Guns.
Evans Motorsport will run Andre Borell, plus another driver in the Australian Formula Ford Championship next year, and the team will also enter two ‘Evans Young Guns’ in the six round Victorian Formula Ford Championship as well as selected events of the national championship.
The inaugural Evans Young Guns squad members are 14-year-old New Zealand Formula Forder Andre Heimgartner along with 15-year-old karter Mathew Hart.
The pair will campaign a pair of Mygale SJ08a chassis.
Heimgartner, from Auckland, is currently competing in his first season of the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship and is looking forward to his first race in Australia.
“I am happy to be joining Evans Motorsport Group and its Young Guns squad,” said Heimgartner.
“The team was one of the top operations in 2009 and they are determined to be the best in 2010. Although I don’t have a lot of experience in cars just yet, I know I’ll have the right people around me to help me develop my skills and experience. I’m sure we’ll be able to challenge for victories throughout the year.”
Canberra-native Hart has enjoyed two successful test days with Evans Motorsport and can’t wait for his first season of car racing.
“After my two test days with the team I knew I had to make the step up to Formula Ford. 2010 is going to be all about learning for me – learning how to drive cars and set them up, learning lots of new tracks and learning a new form of race-craft,” he said.
“It’s also going to be a new experience in working with the team and its engineers in improving the car and my driving techniques.”
Team principal Joshua Evans set up his team in mid-2009, having worked with the successful Sonic Motor Racing Services team for a number of years. At Sonic, Evans worked with the likes of Tim Blanchard, David Reynolds, Dean Fiore and Nick Percat and is now keen to pass on his experience to the next crop of ‘Young Guns.’
“I’ve had the privilege to work with a number of Formula Ford champions in the past and I am looking forward to assisting in the development of many more,” he said.
