Plans for Newcastle to replace Sydney Olympic Park as the Supercars season finale in 2017 are gaining momentum.

Newcastle, 160km north of Sydney, is soon expected to be announced as the championship’s latest venue following confirmation of Gosford’s rejection of hosting the series.

A mock Newcastle street circuit layout has emerged on social media, showing a potential track winding through the city’s east end.

Newcastle’s lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes and Tourism Hunter chairman Will Creedon have both expressed public support for the race, which will go ahead with major funding from Destination NSW.

Creedon told the Newcastle Herald that the proposed circuit would showcase the city in spectacular fashion.

“It would be absolutely picturesque,” he said.

“You can imagine the aerial footage with Nobbys, the harbour, the beaches.

“From a spectator and television perspective, it would be just phenomenal.”

Supercars continues to insist it has multiple options for a new street race amid its ongoing talks with Destination NSW.

The championship kicked a major goal two weeks ago when it locked in its two marquee Queensland events, the Castrol Edge Townsville 400 and Castrol Gold Coast 600, for a further three years.
