CAMS motorsport development manager Cameron McConville is confident driving standards will not blight the inaugural round of the Australian Formula 4 Championship.
Concerns have been raised with the majority of the confirmed 12 car grid set to make their competitive single seater race debuts at Townsville’s Reid Park street circuit this weekend.
The issue was raised again following a series of incidents in the ADAC German Formula 4 championship at Austria last month.
In a bid to ensure these actions are not repeated, Australian F4 championship officials will meet with teams and drivers on Thursday to reiterate the driver code of conduct expected this season.
“I think our driving standards structure is world class,” McConville told Speedcafe.com.
“It is different in Europe. I think when you have 35 car grid of 15-18 year olds with a lot to play for, it can easily get out of hand.
“Clearly we have less numbers than that and I know the FIA have got all the F4 teams together like they did with the F3 teams.
“We will definitely be getting our kids together before.
“None of them have driven at Townsville as far as I know. It’s a fresh start and we want them to race hard but we want them to put on a good show and that will be the message all weekend.
“I know there has been some concerns about the kids going to a street circuit but what I have seen so far is that they are very sensible and a great bunch of guys.
“I’m confident they will put on a good show.”
Meanwhile, the championship has announced a new initiative in the lead up to Townsville.
The Burson Rookies Medal will be awarded to drivers aged 18 and under at every round with an overall winner set to receive a $20,000 of funding for a second Australian F4 campaign.
The CAMS Australian Formula 4 Championship will host three races at the Castrol Edge Townsville 400, with the series’ inaugural encounter scheduled for 0835 on Saturday July 11.
