The public has been advised not to attend the highly publicised Lakeside Park ride day for Marcos Ambrose tomorrow on the grounds of insufficient crowd safety measures.
Potentially thousands of fans could be lured to the historic racetrack just north of Brisbane to see Ambrose ease back behind the wheel of a V8 Supercar at a ride day following his nine-year NASCAR career.
The day will allow media and VIP guests the opportunity to ride with Ambrose as he becomes acclimatised as the team makes ergonomic adjustments for the star’s return to the Championship he won in 2003 and 2004.
Ambrose will then embark on official test days at Queensland Raceway on Sunday and tomorrow week (November 27) ahead of his full-time return to V8s for the DJR Team Penske joint venture next year.
Lakeside Park, run by the same promoter as QR, will also see a livery reveal of the #66 Falcon that Ambrose will campaign as a wildcard at the Sydney NRMA 500 next month.
It is believed that the car will carry commercial backing independent from any companies related to leviathan team owner Roger Penske.
Chief executive of both Lakeside and QR, John Tetley said he understood there would be people who would be annoyed at not being able to gain access at the Kurwongbah facility, but it was in the name of safety.
“From a safety point of view fans would not be welcome,” Tetley told Speedcafe.com
“At QR they would get better viewing and they could see where Ambrose would be fighting in future.
“We do not have proper coverage at Lakeside to allow people in because we have no ability to look after their safety.
“But they would be more than welcome at QR on Sunday where we do have the security in place to make it safe for the public.”
Tetley said there had been an issue with crowds earlier this year when DJR held a sponsor ride day at Lakeside.
“We ended up with a major confrontation on our hands,” Tetley claims.
“After that we made it very clear that if they were coming again and wanted it open we would want to see some security guards in place.”
DJR has said that it would not restrict people if they wanted to attend however they said the onus was not on the team to hire security people for the day.
